The director of medical education has been tasked with prioritizing the hostel facilities by examining the respective institutions. They have also informed that there will be police surveillance in hospitals. The students have been promised by the government that safety audits in hospitals will be conducted on a timely basis and police outposts will be established at all major hospitals, besides installation of CCTVs. : With the assurance from the government, the house surgeons who had boycotted emergency and non-emergency service till Friday evening, decided to call off the strike and join emergency service by 8pm. The Residency Manual will be strictly enforced, the minister said and has also directed that the heads of the departments should ensure leave for the students. The committee will also look into the issues of house surgeons.
SOP will also be released soon for those going to other hospitals as part of the medical residency programme. The committee will submit its report within a month.
The health min also informed that the government has decided to form a committee headed by the medical education department secretary to study and solve the problems raised by PG students and house surgeons. Kerala house surgeons association, earlier in the meeting headed by health minister Veena George along with medical education secretary, director of medical education, principals and superintendents of the medical colleges, PG students and house surgeons organisation representatives, on Friday morning had raised the concern that many house surgeons who have only received temporary registration were working alone, unsupervised, in the absence of casualty medical practitioner a registered doctor. House surgeons will be exempted from night duty till a safety audit is completed in all the hospitals to ensure security of the medicos. This was informed to institution heads in an online meeting on Friday.
